Behind the shutter
The sun was going down on the swimming pool were a few kids were playing. The swimming pool was located in the middle of a group of house which were reflecting the light in different direction. The overall lighting was not as harsh as it would usually be with the low position of the sun at this time of the year.
Here is one image that I took and liked just because of its design, composition, colors, and light:
Original: Nikon D50 • Nikkor 80-200mm
86mm • 1/4000s (ev -1.33) • f/4.5
6.30.2007 6:20AM
I slightly cropped it to remove some empty space at the top and bottom and had it print to 11×14 at my favorite place (Coscto…). While mounting the image in the mat, I found that rotating it by 180 degrees was creating an intriguing view, one that seems plausible, but were we cannot find out how it can be. Look at the image at the top of this blog entry and compare to its original source just above.
I was a bit concerned with the position of the feet in the frame, running or walking away from the viewer to the back and left. I used the title “errant wet feet” to acknowledge that very issue and to make it part of the story. It also gives a guideline for the viewer to refer to, a way to tell that’s OK if the scene is not usual and hard to connect to a known representation.
I also added the usual vignetting effect, with a stronger darkening of the lower part of the image to provide a virtual support and weight.
I submitted this image to the Palo Alto Camera Club on 7.3.07 in the Pictorial category and the judge gave it an Honorable Mention for its humor and technical quality. Now I can’t use this trick again! (or maybe I can ;-))
